Sick among the pure
Vectorscope - Monitoring the blind
(cd Maor Appelbaum Productions)
the maestro of many hats that is Maor Appelbaum has pushed the boundaries of Electronic music on this outstanding Vectorscope release. Listening to Monitoring the Blind is kind of like being Jacque Cousteau – discovering new life forms among the world’s seas. This instrumental music percolates and bubbles as on “The Abyss” and it is cavernous in its reverberations as on the opening
track, “New Art”. In other words this is excellent, deep sea, Ambient music.
This CD is also a good study on spectrum analysis and sound design. The quality of sound among the compositions could be likened to Coil’s use of “sidereal” sound (based upon the sidereal art of Austin Osman Spare), meaning there will be new perceptions of the sound depending on how one listens to the music. Your focus will be given to one element while another sound will sneak up on you front and centre. And while this is going on, other sounds will pan in all directions across the stereo field. This makes for an exciting listen, to be sure.
The one flaw that could be construed while listening to this fantastic release is that it is too detached. In a way it is similar to the criticisms
of the latter work of Scorn (from Gyral onwards). Whereas Scorn had an overt Hip-hop influence, Vectorscope eschews that in favour of a mostly beat less Ambient music. Upon further listening, that isolationist quality is precisely what works in favour of the music on Monitoring the Blind because it is its own unique listen.
This particular music is not for the many, but for the few who will take the time to explore the nuances of these beautifully precise sounds. It is pure, experimental isolationist music waiting for you to discover its watery depths.
